What is information handling?
Every time you look at a clients file, speak to their family or have discussions with colleagues and/or other agencies you are handling their information. Why must I be careful?
Due to the nature of its work, the information held about clients is often very sensitive and must be treated confidentially. Everyone, not just those receiving care services, have certain rights to access information recorded about them and to have their privacy protected.Who says?
Your workplace policies and procedures will outline how information about individuals is treated. These are mainly based on relevant legislation:
Freedom of Information Act 2000)
Care Quality Commission (CQC) Essential
Standards of Quality & Safety Outcome 21: Records
Data
protection act 1998
The General Social Care Council (GSCC) Codes of Practice
The GSCC itself no
longer exists but many of its goals are still used in practice.
